Residents of Port Chalmers and the surrounding area are being urged to report any suspicious activity following a theft and attempted break-in.
Sergeant Ian Paulin said someone attempted to break into a house under construction in Aramoana, between October 19 and November 1.
A wrought iron gate was also stolen from a St Leonards property some time in the past three weeks.
Sgt Paulin said Port Chalmers Senior Constable Steve Tvrdeic would return today after being on light duties.
