Weather 'wild ride' tipped to continue at weekend

Spring's ''wild ride'' is expected to continue on the weekend, with snow on the hills, blustery winds and cool temperatures, MetService meteorologist Dan Corbett says.

The holiday weekend will bring a westerly wind flow across the country, which will mean generally drier and milder weather in the east and wetter weather in the west.

''That said, the weekend won't be a complete washout - but it may be a good idea to keep a raincoat and umbrella handy.''

Temperatures in Dunedin are expected to get to 24degC today and 18degC on Saturday, with a high on Sunday of 13degC, with gusty westerlies.

Inland, Queenstown is expected to get snow showers, with a high of only 9degC on Sunday. Alexandra is predicted to be dry on Saturday and get wintry showers on Sunday.

''Don't be surprised if you see on the hills of Otago a little bit of snow.''

On Monday, Labour Day, conditions are expected to be similar, with showers and cooler weather.

Overall, it would be a blustery weekend with cooler temperatures than recent days, Mr Corbett said.

''You'll need that extra jumper. It's not the weekend for deckchairs and bikinis.''
