Wet and cool start to Christmas Day forecast

A wet and chilly start to Christmas Day is forecast for Otago but the weather is expected to improve, MetService says.

While Christmas Eve was expected to be generally fine, coastal cloud was forecast.

A southwest change would move up the South Island overnight, forecaster Ian Gall said.

"It'll be a cool start to Christmas Day."

Occasional showers would cross the region on Christmas morning, but they were expected to clear during the day.

"It'll be reasonably fine, with the coast picking up the odd shower, with inland areas generally fairly good."

Fresh southerlies would move to the northeast late in the afternoon and temperatures would improve.

On Boxing Day, the weather was expected to be generally fine, with fresh northeasterlies blustery along the coast.

Good weather would continue during the weekend, with a brief southerly front hitting Dunedin on Saturday night.

Sunday would be fine, he said.
