Window-smashing charge

A window-smashing spree last month has resulted in a Dunedin teenager facing a wilful-damage charge and police investigating the involvement of another youth.

The two Dunedin teenagers allegedly smashed 34 windows at two rugby clubs, a soccer club and a model engineering club in South Dunedin over the weekend of March 26-27.

Glaziers estimated the damage cost at tens of thousands of dollars.

The windows were broken at the Dunedin Rugby Football Club's rooms in Moana Rua Rd (14 windows), Pirates Football Club's rooms at Hancock Park (16), the Otago Model Engineering Society clubrooms in John Wilson Ocean Dr (two) and Melchester Rovers Association Football Club's rooms at Marlow Park (two).

Acting Senior Sergeant Chris George said a 17-year-boy would appear in Dunedin District Court on Monday, charged with wilful damage. Police were talking to his alleged accomplice, he said.

A man has been charged with intimidation after an alleged road-rage incident in Arthur St, Dunedin, on Tuesday morning.

Acting Snr Sgt George said a driver allegedly was racially abusive towards another driver, after the complainant tooted at him when the alleged offender did a U-turn in front of his vehicle.

When the two vehicles were stopped at a traffic lights, the 34-year-old man allegedly made threats, and racially abused the victim, he said.

The man has been charged with intimidation, and was likely to receive a ticket for his driving, Acting Snr Sgt George said.

Mosgiel police are investigating an "amateur attempt" to steal copper which caused extensive damage to a state house.

Constable Jason Braid said offenders broke into a vacant Housing New Zealand home in Murray St last week with the intention of stealing the hot-water cylinder.

The cylinder was left at the scene. A significant amount of water damage was caused.

"It's a fairly amateur attempt."

A 25kg copper tank was stolen from Memorial Park Stadium in Mosgiel on Monday night. It was possible both incidents were linked, Const Braid said.
