A woman has been airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries after two cars crashed head-on in Dunedin.
The crash occurred about 4.38pm on Highcliff Rd yesterday, Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Dunedin police, said.
"A Mistubishi vehicle containing 3 female occupants was travelling north on Highcliff Road when it collided with a Toyota Surf vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.
"The crash occurred on a moderate left hand bend."
A 20-year-old woman, believed to have been travelling in the back seat of the Mitsubishi was airlifted to the Dunedin Public Hospital with serious head injuries, Mr Brown said.
The 19-year-old driver and 20-year-old front seat passenger were taken to Dunedin Public Hospital by ambulance with minor to moderate injuries.
The occupants of the Toyota Surf, men aged 26 and 28, appeared to have been uninjured.
Emergency service crews from Portobello and Dunedin attended the scene, Mr Brown said.
"At this stage it is not known what has caused the crash, however, it is believed that alcohol is not a contributing factor."
