WorkSafe orders changes at factory

Worksafe has issued an improvement notice to the Mainland Poultry plant at Waikouati after a worker was airlifted to hospital after their leg became trapped in a roller.

Emergency services were called to the incident at Mainland Poultry in Matanaka Dr on March 19.

The worker was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital with moderate injuries.

A WorkSafe spokesman said it had subsequently visited the business and issued an improvement notice.

Mainland Poultry agribusiness general manager Judith Mair said the company had been working closely with WorkSafe to make improvements to its production processes.

"This has included putting extra protocols in place, and reinforcing existing procedures, to keep staff safe when they are cleaning our sheds," Ms Mair said.

Staff health and safety was Mainland Poultry’s top priority, she said.
