Practical subjects and happy pupils have made a visit to Dunedin enlightening and worthwhile for a group of Chinese education agents.

On a trip organised by Education Dunedin, the group of 10 has been in the city familiarising themselves with secondary schools, Otago Polytechnic, the University of Otago, and English language educators.

Education Dunedin marketing manager Sue Radcliffe said the trip was part of the organisation's strategy to invest in the Chinese education market.

It was the first time a group of Chinese education agents had been brought to the city and it was hoped the Education Dunedin and the Dunedin City Council-funded trip would lead to an increase in people coming here to study.

The first members of the group arrived on Monday and will stay in town until tomorrow.

During the week, they also visited South Otago High School, in Balclutha, and Blue Mountain College, in Tapanui, and did tourist activities "with the aim of them understanding what it's like to be a student in Dunedin", Ms Radcliffe said.

She described the education system in China as "formal, regimented and cloistered" and said the agents kept commenting on how pupils here were "so happy".

Agent Melissa Qin described the trip as "very special".

She found the school visits most insightful, particularly seeing the different subjects offered in New Zealand, such as woodworking.

"I think students study here not for study, but for life," she said.

Yetta Kwan found the opportunity to familiarise herself with the city, and the school system, invaluable and knew she was better equipped to offer consultation to pupils and students wanting to come here.
