Poetry: The Anzac service

Surrounded by giant, gruff old men,

Nothing can scare or sadden them.

My proud thoughts quickly grind to a halt,

When the bugle echoes all about.

Inside, the memories flooding back,

Outside, the men's tears cause me a shock.

How could something from that long ago

Affect all these heroes, even now?

Surrounded by weary, small, old men,

The memories scared and saddened them.

My new thoughts ring in the morning air,

As the bugle's tune shudders to a halt.
