Taking viewers back to the magic of childhood

This painting is part of Lucy's Tyrell's year 13 portfolio for NCEA level 3.

Lucy has been a consistently high achieving art pupil at St Kevin's College for the past four years and is making a name for herself as one of North Otago's emerging artists, featuring in recent school art auctions and local exhibitions.

Lucy's work tends to express ideas and concepts about fantasy worlds and it often involves elements of transformation and morphing the real into the unreal.

Lucy is noted for her illustrative abilities, as well as her ability to communicate issues that reflect modern society.

Her stylistic approaches predominantly centre around a vibrant mix of impressionism coupled with a healthy dose of surrealism, methods she uses to good advantage when investigating her ideas.

This approach can take viewers back to the magic of childhood and encourage them to reflect on life.

Issues Lucy's work has addressed in the past have been racial and environmental concerns and the importance of respecting all aspects of our world.

These concerns and her ability to show the beauty of our world are directly related to Lucy's background of rural vineyard life.
