New Zealand First leader Winston Peters wants to make the SuperGold card a smart card, with users able to use pay-wave and having an account and bank through the card.

However, details are sparse.

Mr Peters announced his plans on Saturday in a speech which played right to the older voters in New Zealand.

He accused Labour and National of tinkering with superannuation, picking out Finance Minister Steven Joyce for particular criticism for trying to cut the SuperGold Card travel concession.

The new card would provide every card member, on average, $800 to $1000 tax free, he said, again without details.

Mr Peters is in Dunedin on Thursday for a rally at 1.30pm either in the Octagon, if it is fine, or the Fullwood Room, Dunedin Centre, if it is wet.
