Rob Mokaraka, 36, now faces four charges relating to the incident outside his home in Point Chevalier, west of downtown Auckland, on July 27.
Mokaraka was initially charged with possession of an offensive weapon and assault with a weapon.
An Avondale police spokesman today told NZPA Mokaraka now also faces charges of threatening to kill and of possession of an imitation firearm to resist arrest.
A court appearance scheduled for today was postponed as Mokaraka remains in hospital.
Police said Mokaraka rang 111 to notify them of an armed, agitated man in the area, and then dressed up as the man.
When police arrived he allegedly advanced on them carrying a meat cleaver and two knives and was then shot once in the chest by a police officer.
He was subsequently charged with possession of an offensive weapon and assault with a weapon.
