Axe-wielding robber chased from dairy

An axe-wielding robber was chased off by the owners after attempting to hold up an Upper Hutt dairy last night.

Police said the robber wearing disguise walked into Akatarawa Road Dairy about 7.30pm demanding money but fled empty-handed with the owners in hot pursuit.

A 17-year-old male was found soon after by police and will appear in Upper Hutt District Court today charged with assault with intent to rob.

"The dairy owners were left extremely shaken in what was a very frightening experience for them but have not suffered any physical injuries during the incident," Detective Sergeant Richard Orr said.

He said police were keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or seen any suspicious activity in the area.
