Charges after fatal jetski accident

Two people will face charges after a fatal jetski crash near Rotorua in January.

Bishop Thompson, 17, fell off a jetski being driven by a friend on Lake Okareka on January 8 and was subsequently struck by another jetski. His body was recovered four days later.

Following a police investigation, the matter was referred to the Rotorua Crown Solicitors' Office to get a legal opinion on what charges, if any, should be laid, Detective Sergeant John Wilson said.

It recommended that the driver of the jetski which Mr Thompson fell from and the driver of the jetski which hit and killed him should be charged.

They are to be charged within the next week under the Maritime Transport Act for using a vessel in a manner so as to cause unnecessary danger to any person or to property.

It was up to individuals to take the relevant water safety precautions for their own, and other's safety. Mr Wilson said.
