Firefighters have brought a large fire at a commercial building in Christchurch under control.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at an automotive repair shop on Buchan St, Sydenham, about 11.40am today.

One person has minor injuries as a result of the fire, which forced nearby buildings to be evacuated.

At the time of the evacuations, police said they were assisting with road closures and traffic management of the immediate area.

An employee from neighbouring business, Long Cloud Kayaks, said staff have been told to evacuate.

A New Zealand Herald reporter at the scene said an ambulance had arrived and it appeared someone was receiving treatment.

A police spokesperson said several roads were closed and traffic management was in place.

“People in the area are advised to listen to directions from staff and avoid the vicinity within 100 metres of the fire."
