Driver dies in crash after police pursuit in Whāngarei

Police say investigations are under way after a driver died in a crash following a police pursuit in Whāngarei at the weekend.

Superintendent Matt Srhoj said officers saw a car travelling at high speed along Dave Culham Drive at 11.15pm on Saturday.

"The police unit responded and the red and blue lights were activated on Riverside Drive," he said. "The exact response will form part of the critical investigation."

The car crashed on Memorial Drive and the officers gave first aid, but the driver - who was alone in the vehicle - died at the scene.

Matt Srhoj said several investigations were under way to establish all the facts surrounding the incident.

This included notifying the Independent Police Conduct Authority, as was standard procedure.

"We are also working to support the family of the deceased, as well as our staff who were involved."

Police want to hear from witnesses or see CCTV footage from the area between Port Road and Memorial Drive in Whāngarei from about the time of the incident.
