Enrolments removed in possible voting scam

Local body electoral officials have removed 306 enrolments for the super city election in a possible voting scam.

Police were called in when scores of enrolment forms were received from people giving the same addresses in Papatoetoe, south of Auckland.

"The registrar received enrolment forms for these people at addresses where they are not living," said Murray Wicks, national manager at the Electoral Enrolment Centre.

"We have cancelled those enrolment forms and we are helping those people get special voting papers for where they do live."

Mr Wicks said the investigation began last month when the apparent enrolment irregularities were discovered.

He said the enrolment forms may not have been filled in by the people named on the forms and police were investigating.

Mr Wicks said it was not known if any votes would be rejected.

Earlier reports suggested only two houses were involved with 90 voters enrolled as living in the two addresses.

However, Mr Wicks said there were more than two houses involved.

"It would be more than that. There were 306 enrolment forms. They were all in the Papatoetoe area."

He said New Zealand had a strong record of integrity in enrolment and voting.

"The accuracy of the electoral roll is something we work hard to maintain through extensive checks and monitoring."
