Journalist Colin Moore dies in boating accident

Author and award-winning journalist Colin Moore has died after a boating accident in the Far North.

Mr Moore, who was in his 60s, was at his family bach at Taupo Bay, when the incident happened about 5.30pm on Friday.

It is believed he was crushed when a boat trailer rolled backwards as it was being removed from the water. He died at the scene, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Mr Moore had been a journalist since 1964. He was the New Zealand Herald's travel editor for several years. He also wrote several books, including Outdoors in New Zealand and recently released Take a Kid Outdoors.

He was recognised at last month's Qantas Media Awards, with his piece Study to be Quiet winning in the transport and travel section.

Colin Moore is survived by his wife Fran, daughter Naivasha and son Rupert.
