Less days for dads than mums

This Father's Day do something special for your dad, as he won't have as many Father's Days as your mum will have Mother's Days.

Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) has released some facts about fathers to mark Father's Day on Sunday.

SNZ government statistician Geoff Bascand said fathers on average had seven fewer Father's Days than mothers had Mother's Days, because men generally started parenting later in life and women had a longer life span.

Last year on Father's Day, 145 babies were born.

Mr Bascand said the average age of a father of a new baby was 33, but one in 100 babies had fathers over 50.

And today's newborn babies had fathers who were, on average, five years older than their own fathers were when they were born.

Fathers were also more likely to help around the house than other men -- 91 percent of fathers did housework, cooking and cleaning, while only 79 percent of men who were not living with a dependent child did these things.

Fathers with a child under one, were also running on less sleep than the average of 8.5 hours -- 42 minutes less, said Mr Bascand.

More than a quarter (28 percent) of babies born in New Zealand last year were to fathers who were not born in New Zealand.

This compared with 22 percent a decade ago, he said.
