Lunchtime pedestrians in downtown Auckland today were given an eye-catching message about what to eat.
"Save the Planet, Go Vegetarian" was the advice from three women clad in bikinis made of lettuce leaves. The three "Lettuce Ladies" -- Sydney-based Fawn Porter, and Aucklanders Jess Martin and Genevieve Ogilvie-Lee -- were promoting animal rights group Peta's call for people to switch to a plant-based diet.
Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) argues that such a move is the most effective way to fight climate change and reduce environmental destruction caused by raising animals for food.
Ms Porter, a former Aucklander, said she and her colleagues were pleased with the feedback from passers-by during their 45 minutes on Queen St.
"The lettuce leaves are just a really fun and light-hearted way to draw attention to the issue which has a deeper roots in animal cruelty and the environment," she said.
"The information we give out is just the first step. Often we get huge hits on our website after these demos from people interested to know what we're all about."
