Man fighting for life after Auckland assault

A man has been arrested in relation to a serious assault in south Auckland this morning which left another man with life-threatening head injuries.

The 48-year-old victim was assaulted at an address on Moncrieff Ave, in the suburb of Clendon Park, about 12.30am.

St John Ambulance communications team manager Norm Ngatai said the man suffered life-threatening head injuries, either from the assault or his head hitting the ground.

He was taken by ambulance to Middlemore Hospital and was later transferred to Auckland City Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

Police said a 20-year-old man had been arrested and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Ellwood, of the Manurewa CIB, said the two men were known to each other.

"Police will continue their enquiries today to establish what happened at the address."
