Man found guilty of sexually assaulting boy

A Gisborne man has been found guilty at trial on nine charges of sexual assault against a minor.

Ivan James Wilson, then 27, repeatedly sexually assaulted a 13-year-old boy between June 24, 2008 and December 25, 2009.

After deliberating for about five hours, a jury in the High Court in Gisborne convicted him of three charges of sexual violation, three of attempted sexual violation, one of indecent assault and two of doing an indecent act.

He was acquitted of one charge of indecent assault due to insufficient evidence and was found not guilty of another.

He will be sentenced in Gisborne on August 28.

Wilson was released from prison on June 24, 2008, after serving time for two charges of unlawful sexual connection against a 14-year-old boy.

Crown prosecutor Russell Collins successfully applied to have his previous convictions heard in court and said his latest known offending was identical.

"You have to walk in the shoes of a 13-year-old boy," he told the jury in his closing address.

He questioned the defence accusation the boy made it up in response to Wilson alleging the boy's father had sexually molested him and his siblings.

"There was too much detail and it was spontaneous detail, for it not to be true. He's not making this up."

In a Child Youth and Family video interview of the complainant played to the court, he described how he felt after the man assaulted him.

"I just felt like going down to one of the hills and just throwing myself off."

Defence counsel Eric Forster argued the boy's evidence was too inconsistent to be true.

"If you put the magnifying glass on Ivan's evidence, it's pretty consistent."

If the allegations were true, the boy would have complained about it earlier instead of putting himself back in jeopardy.

Mr Collins: "The text book about how victims would react hasn't been written."
