Manawatu Gorge has reopened after two slips closed both lanes on Tuesday.
The second, larger slip saw 5000 cubic metres of debris spill across the road, which links the lower North Island's west and east coasts.
About 7000 vehicles use the gorge each day and have been forced to take either Rimutaka Hill Road to Wellington or Pahiatua Track to Palmerston North as alternative routes.
