Man's fingers severed in bench saw accident

 An Eastern Bay man was flown to hospital for surgery after severing his fingers with a bench saw.

The Trustpower TECT helicopter took the 77-year-old Opotiki man to Waikato Hospital about 1pm today for specialist surgery to reattach two fingers on his left hand.

Pilot Liam Brettkelly said the man had been using a bench saw when the incident occurred.

He was taken by St John ambulance to Whakatane airport before being flown to Waikato Hospital.
