Maori Party makes offer

The change in Labour leadership appears to have won over the Maori Party.

President Tuku Morgan yesterday called on Jacinda Ardern and Kelvin Davis to work with his party.

"Maori people throughout the country are telling me they want our party to work with Labour if it’s in a position to form a government after September 23,’’ he said.

The Maori and Mana parties are currently working together to defeat Labour in Maori seats.

Prime Minister Bill English is not fazed by the Maori Party’s offer to make peace with Labour.

It has been one of National’s partner parties since 2008. It has been hostile to Labour and it has been seen as a post-election ally for National.

"Small parties try to give themselves as much choice as possible, so it’s understandable what the Maori Party is doing,’’ he said.
