The mother of a man badly beaten in Napier last week is furious the men charged with the crime were free on bail for murder charges.
Jason Lawrence was left with serious head injuries after being beaten and robbed in Napier on Friday about 4pm.
The 22-year-old cook was taken unconscious to Hawke's Bay Hospital and put in an induced coma, from which he recovered from on Saturday.
His backpack was stolen, containing CVs, an iPod and cellphone.
Mr Lawrence's mother, Katie Pleasants said two of the four men who had been charged for the assault should "absolutely not" have been on the street as they had been earlier charged for separate murders.
"Judges have got to consider the safety of other members of the community," Ms Pleasants told The Dominion Post.
Three of the four men were granted name suppression in Napier District Court yesterday.
They were charged with aggravated robbery and have been remanded in custody to appear in court again on February 25.
Shannon Hazel, 19, is the only man who can be named. Two others have name suppression and a fourth cannot be named because of his age and will next appear in the Youth Court.
