One dead in Masterton garage fire

A person died in a garage fire at a house in Masterton late last night.

The garage, on Cameron Crescent in the Wairarapa town, was being used as a sleep-out, fire service shift manager David Meikle said.

Fire-fighters were called to the blaze shortly before 11pm and found the building well alight.

They pulled a person from inside the garage, but were unable to resuscitate them.

No details about the gender or age of the person who died were available, Mr Meikle said.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but fire investigators will begin an investigation today.
