Police investigate Nelson death

Nelson police are investigating the death of an elderly woman who collapsed while she was being committed to a mental health unit early today.

The 75-year-old woman was taken to hospital after she suffered breathing difficulties while being taken to a Nelson-Marlborough District Health Board mental unit.

She later died, Radio New Zealand reported.

The woman was not being forcibly handled by either the mental health worker or two officers who assisted at the time, Nelson Bays acting area commander Detective Inspector John Winter said.

Her death was not suspicious and would be referred to the coroner.
