Scam targets Chinese businesses

Chinese businesses in the wider Auckland area are being targeted in a scam that includes threatening phone calls, police said today.

Detective Sergeant Tim Chao said the caller claimed to be part of part of an Asian gang and demanded a sum of money, sometimes alleging that these funds were needed to help needy associates.

He said the caller, who appeared to be in an overseas location, might also mention firearms and that there were people watching the premises concerned.

"Police believe the calls are a scam to try and swindle money from frightened locals into foreign bank accounts," he said.

"These telephone calls mirror similar incidents that have occurred in Canada and the United States."

Mr Chao said police inquiries were continuing with authorities in Asia to try to identify the culprits.

He said people receiving such calls were advised to note all relevant details.

They should not provide any personal information or meet any payment demands.

They should report the matter to police if warranted and they should observe basic safety precautions.

Mr Chao said people who had genuine fears for their safety should contact police immediately.

He said police wanted to hear from anyone with information that would help to identify those behind the calls.
