The physical search for a missing 17-year-old in Christchurch has been paused while police "explore other avenues" of the investigation.

Marley was last seen in Opawa about 2.30pm on September 26, but his vehicle was later located in Sumner, prompting an extensive search effort around coastal areas on Saturday and Sunday.

Detective Sergeant Lucy Aldridge said police, Land Search and Rescue, Coastguard Sumner, Fire and Emergency NZ, Surf Lifesaving NZ and volunteers searched the Scarborough whitewash area for him on Saturday.

On Sunday, search efforts focused on the surrounding bays area, using drones, boats and land teams.

Aldridge said Marley was wearing a light grey-coloured Adidas hoodie and low-cut burgundy-coloured Converse shoes.

Police asked Sumner and Scarborough residents with CCTV cameras on their property to review the footage for any signs of the 17-year-old.

"We are urging anyone in Sumner and Scarborough with CCTV or doorbell cameras on their property to check their cameras from 2:45pm on Friday," Aldridge said.

If you see Marley or can help police find him, call 111 and quote reference number 250927/3331.
