Heavy rain has caused slips, flooding and tree falls on State Highway 6, closing the road north of Murchison.
A police spokesperson said emergency services are responding to several incidents between Murchison and Kohatu.
They are advising motorists that the road is likely to be closed for some time while agencies work to clear it.
NZTA has a detour in place via SH63 and Korere-Tophouse Road.However, due to conditions, police are asking motorists to delay travel or avoid the area altogether.
