Teen charged with manslaughter over crash

An 18-year-old from Ohakune has been charged with manslaughter over the death of another teen in a car crash.

Ezra Fleurty, 19, was killed and a 20-year-old man left in critical condition when the car they were travelling in failed to take a gentle bend in Ohakune, hitting a post and raised stone-edged garden in the early hours of September 23.

Maia Thorby, who police say was behind the wheel, initially faced charges of driving with excess breath alcohol and possession of cannabis.

However, the breath alcohol charge has since been withdrawn and replaced with one charge of manslaughter and two of driving with excess breath alcohol causing injury.

He will appear in Taihape District Court on November 13.
