A second pedestrian in one day has been hit by a vehicle in Lower Hutt tonight.
A pedestrian was hit by a van on Victoria St shortly after 6pm and was taken to hospital with moderate injuries, Senior Sergeant Steve Braybrook told NZPA.
Police were speaking with the van's driver.
Meanwhile, police had spoken to the driver of a truck and trailer unit that hit a woman on Hebden Crescent this morning.
The 60-year-old was standing on the edge of the street about 7.40am when the truck turned past her on to State Highway 2.
Police said it appeared that, during the turn, the truck or trailer hooked on to the woman's backpack and dragged her a short distance before she fell free.
The truck did not stop and a passing motorist took the woman to Hutt Hospital.
She underwent surgery today and was in a stable condition tonight.
The driver was tracked down this afternoon. Police said he was being co-operative, and did not appear to have known he had hit the woman.
