Aust journalist released from Singapore jail

Australian TV reporter Peter Lloyd, convicted in Singapore on drug charges, has been eleased from prison after serving about six-and-a-half months of a 10-month sentence, a prison spokeswoman said.

Hamidul Haq, Lloyd's lawyer, said he had not spoken to Lloyd and did not know if he had been deported. Singapore usually deports foreigners as soon as they are released from prison.

A spokeswoman at the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority was not immediately available for comment.

Lloyd, who had been the New Delhi-based South Asia correspondent for the Australian Broadcasting Corp, pleaded guilty in December to three charges of consumption and possession of methamphetamine and possession of a drug utensil.

Police arrested him in July after catching him with 0.28g of methamphetamine.

Defence lawyers had argued that Lloyd used drugs to relieve symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, which he developed while covering horrific events including bombings in Bali and Pakistan.

Singapore imposes severe penalties for drug use and possession, including a mandatory death penalty for anyone caught with more than 15g of heroin or more than 500g of marijuana.
