NZers injured in Vanuatu plane crash

Three New Zealanders were injured when a light charter plane crashed in Vanuatu yesterday.

The plane, with seven people on board - five of them New Zealanders - crashed at Port Vila about 5pm local time yesterday, the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said today.

Five of the seven on board were Kiwis and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said the injuries to the three were non-critical and one of the victims was due to be flown home.

The New Zealand High Commission in Vanuatu is providing consular assistance to the New Zealanders involved.

A spokesman for Vanuatu police, Kalshem Bongran, told Radio New Zealand the pilot had difficulty locating the runway due to heavy rain and thick fog, and may have been running low on fuel as he circled.

Vanuatu aviation authorities were also investigating whether the automatic runway lighting system may have failed.
