Red Cross Southland area manager Sally Wast will fly to Brisbane today to help with flood relief co-ordination work, and her Dunedin counterpart, Karen Clements, the Red Cross Otago area manager, may also soon be on her way.
Ms Clements, said Ms Wast had been "very, very happy to go over" to provide her support.
There was a strong possibility that she would also be asked to help co-ordinate Red Cross volunteers in Brisbane, and she was also very keen to help in any way, Ms Clements said.
"That's what we're here for," she said.
Ms Wast was flying to Brisbane as part of a four-strong team of national and regional Red Cross managers from New Zealand.
Ms Clements was likely to be part of a second Red Cross team to be sent later, but full details had not yet been confirmed, she said.
The flooding near Brisbane and elsewhere in Queensland was on an "unprecedented" and "mind-boggling" scale.
The relatively small images on television screens did not fully convey "the full picture of what they're going through".
"The sheer scale of it is quite intimidating."
Video images showing cars full of people being swept away by flash floods running through Queensland towns had also been frightening.
"I just really feel for the people who are going through it."
It was a tragic situation and some harrowing incidents "can bring tears to your eye", she said.
NZ Red Cross had launched a national appeal - involving the Australian Floods Fund - to help Queensland flood victims.
• Donations to the Red Cross appeal can be made in several ways, including online at www.redcross.org.nz/donate and by visiting the Dunedin Red Cross headquarters at 31 York Pl.
