Thatcher's surgery is on: Son

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was to undergo surgery Friday afternoon on a broken arm.

Speaking outside the London hospital where his mother has been staying for a week, Thatcher's son, Mark, told reporters the scheduled surgery would go ahead as planned. He said his mother was in good spirits ahead of the operation.

Thatcher's spokesman, Mark Worthington, told reporters Thursday the operation would involve putting a pin in Thatcher's arm, which she broke in a fall at her London home.

Thatcher, 83, has suffered a number of health problems in recent years, including a series of minor strokes.

She served three terms as prime minister. After leaving office in 1990, she was named Baroness Thatcher and took a seat in the House of Lords.
