'We had pact never to become lovers': Torvill and Dean

Olympic gold medal skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean shared a secret pact never to become lovers.

The acclaimed English skaters, who stunned the world with their sensuous performance to Ravel's Bolero at the 1984 Winter Olympics, have revealed how they did not want to ruin their chemistry on the ice by having a relationship.

"We decided very early on that if we had slept together we couldn't have skated together but there was never anyone else in the relationship while we were competing," Torvill told The Sun newspaper.

"Even though we weren't involved romantically, we spent lots of time together off the ice choosing fabrics for costumes, going to ballet lessons, selecting music.

"On the ice we were both 100 percent dedicated to being the best hard workers from working-class backgrounds." The pair met when they were growing up in Nottingham and went on to become skating legends when they won gold in Sarajevo on Valentine's Day 25 years ago.

"February 14 - to a lot of people its Valentine's Day but to us it's Bolero Day," Dean said.

Torvill added that the pair, who now star in Dancing On Ice on ITV 1 in Britain, speak every day.

"It's become more special as the years have gone by. People still talk about it and it's made us realise how memorable it was for people watching." Dean is married to American skater Jill Trenary and has two sons, while Torvill is married to events promoter Phil Christensen and has two children.
