Te Anau’s most frequented picnic area at Blue Gum Point, Te Anau Boat harbour has had the existing popular swimming pontoon replaced with one twice the size (6m x 3m) for visitors and locals to enjoy at a cost of $16,000+GST.

Te Anau Boating Club originally installed the swimming pontoon for swimmers to enjoy the lake over 20 years ago. The pontoon was coming to the end of its life and the Boating Club resolved they would not be purchasing a replacement pontoon as it was not in line with the purpose of the club.

At a meeting of the Te Anau Community Board meeting in October the Board were presented with a request from the Boating Club for SDC Council through the Community Board to consider being responsible for the swimming pontoon on Lake Te Anau.

Te Anau Community Board agreed to taken over the ownership and responsibility for the existing swimming pontoon on Lake Te Anau on the condition Department of Conservation concession and the resource consent from Environment Southland could be transferred to Southland District Council. The swimming pontoon was funded from the Community Boards Administration Budget for General Projects.

Mr Ebel Kremer SDC Mararoa-Waimea Ward Councillor, said “Swimmers were having a fantastic time on the new pontoon, we might need a larger one”

“The pontoon has been used extensively all holidays which is great to see and a good investment by the Community Board”, Kremer said.
