Arrest follows bike-shop grab

An alleged burglar with a fondness for expensive bicycles was caught by Dunedin police at the weekend.

The 40-year-old Dunedin man was arrested after a window was smashed in Cycle Surgery, in lower Stuart St, at 10.30pm on Friday and a $3000 wheel removed from a display stand.

After further inquiries, police recovered a $10,000 limited edition Avanti time trial bike that had been stolen in a smash and grab a day earlier, on Thursday, also at 10.30pm.

"We recovered a bicycle from an address, which was stolen in similar circumstances from Brown's Bikes in Crawford St on Thursday," Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said.

The man was rearrested by police last night after allegedly breaking a window at the McIver and Veitch Ltd motorcycle shop in Crawford St and taking a motorbike helmet about 6pm, police said.
