Four people needed medical treatment after a chemical incident at Lyttelton Port in Christchurch yesterday.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said it received reports of two people trapped in a tank on the fishing vessel Antarctic Discovery about 9.40am.
The pair had to be rescued from the tank by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.
The two people pulled from the tank were given first aid before St John took over.
A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said four patients were taken to Christchurch Hospital — three in a serious condition and one in a moderate condition.
A port spokesman said the vessel was in dry dock and Maritime New Zealand was investigating. — APL
