One person is dead and another seriously injured after a crash that has left State Highway 1 partially blocked north of Kaikōura.
Police said they were notified at 9.38am that two vehicles had collided on the highway near Ohau Point.
Police initially said two people had been seriously hurt, but in an update at 11.38am they advised that one person had died, and the second person had been airlifted to hospital.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said the highway was under stop/go control near the Ohau Point Lookout.
"Due to the nature of this crash, police-led investigations and a closure will likely be required," NZTA said.
