Relampago gave jockey Jan Cameron her first New Zealand win for the season.
She rode the Gordon-trained Bus Us to win the 2007 Invercargill Cup.
Cameron resumed riding in New Zealand late in December after a five-month stint in Queensland, riding mainly at Darwin and Broome.
She will return there in April.
Relampago was ridden identically to last year when Ashlee Mundy had the mount.
He was close to the pacemaker, Quantum Dude, and went clear early in the run home.
Relampago is raced by breeders Bill and Allison Hazlett, of Waianawa, Colin Ashby, of Cromwell, and Graeme Hill, of Arrowtown.
The 6yr-old Yamanin Vital-Elle Chase gelding races in the colours of white with emerald green sleeves of Hazlett's father, Bill, who raced Aurora Borealis, winner of the Invercargill Cup in successive years - 1946 (dead-heat with Pride Of Mossburn) and 1947.
Hazlett senior also won the race as an owner with Gunther (1949), Apathy (1964) and Eiffel Tower (1965).
Relampago will now be aimed at the $100,000 Riverton Cup on April 8.
He finished fifth in the Riverton Cup last year.
Pukekohe apprentice Jason Collett had his biggest win, aboard Alegrio in the $55,000 Southland Guineas.
Collett (17) is apprenticed to his father, Richard Collett, at Pukekohe.
Richard was formerly based at Gore as a jumps jockey and he later trained with his father, Don.
Jason rode a winner as an amateur rider two years ago.
He began riding as an apprentice eight months ago and has ridden 31 winners.
Alegrio raced handy and won by three-quarters of a length from Miss Millbrook, who ran on strongly from the rear.
Paul Taylor and Claire Anderson were suspended for careless riding on Saturday.
Taylor admitted shifting out in the home straight in the first race at New Plymouth when not sufficiently clear.
He was riding Thrutheroof.
He caused Molly Dooker to clip a heel and blunder.
Taylor was suspended until midnight on February 28.
Anderson admitted tightening Munro near the 800m in race four at the Southland meeting when riding Lucrative.
She was suspended until midnight on March 8.
Oregon Blaze, who faltered near the 600m in race three, was found have bled from both nostrils.
He is stood down from racing for a mandatory three months.
Michael Walker was fined $1250 after weighing in 0.75kg light for Run Like Al at New Plymouth.
Run Like Al was disqualified from fourth placing.
Walker was unable to offer a satisfactory explanation to stewards for the discrepancy but accepted responsibility.
Cambridge trainers Murray and Bjorn Baker are viewing a two-pronged attack on the $1 million Auckland Cup next month, after the wins by Vickezzchardonnay and Mr Tipsy on Saturday, NZPA reports.
Vickezzchardonnay stormed home to win the group three $80,000 Taranaki Cup at New Plymouth.
Mr Tipsy triumphed easily in a rating 90 $20,000 race at Ellerslie.
Murray Baker trained Vizier to win the 1980 Taranaki CupVickezzchardonnay was a strong-finishing fourth in the Wellington Cup last month after her rider got his whip caught in her mane.
She ran third in the New Zealand Cup.
She was forced to change ground on Saturday when Madradeus hung in on the home turn.
Madradeus shot clear at the 250m, but Vickezzchardonnay prevailed by a short neck.
Vickezzchardonnay was rehandicapped 1kg for the Auckland Cup on March 4, taking her to 52kg.
Mr Tipsy was impressive in recording his fifth win from nine starts at Ellerslie.
"He has been talented right from the start. Hopefully, he will make the Auckland Cup field," Baker said.
He is considering the Sydney Cup with Mr Tipsy.
Bjorn Baker accompanied Fully Fledged to Sydney for the Sovereign Stakes at Randwick, but the horse was scratched because of the wet track.
He will now contest the $A200,000 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on February 28.
