The residents of that district have taken most kindly to the house-lighting phase of the Waipori supply, and quite a number of people are having their houses wired for electric lighting.
Judging by reports, the various electrical firms interested have no cause to complain of slackness at the present time.
The poles and wires for the street lighting have been erected, but by some unfortunate mischance the transformer ordered from Home for that phase of the lighting scheme proved to be of the wrong type.
To get over the difficulty, Mr Stark proposes to have the voltage reduced at the city power station instead of on the local circuit, which will necessitate a delay of nearly a couple of weeks before the borough lighting scheme can be completed.
Meanwhile the house-lighting circuit is fully equipped, and private installations will be connected with the mains as soon as the necessary requirements have been fulfilled to the satisfaction of the corporation and Mr Shepherd, the underwriters' inspector.
Those who had the satisfaction of using the new light on Saturday night were delighted with it.
Kerosene lamps were scrapped forthwith, and there promises to be quite a slump in the local demand for kerosene.
• The invitation of the Acclimatisation Society to witness the process of securing and stripping trout on Saturday afternoon drew a crowd of persons to the banks of the Water of Leith.
The place chosen was what is known as the bathing pool, close to the head of Duke Street Gardens, and there must have been from 500 to 600 persons present, including a number of ladies.
By the skilful manipulation of a drag net a seething, spluttering mass of trout was drawn to within a few feet of the bank, where the fish could be best seen by the crowd of eager spectators.
They were then lifted by means of hand nets, and, after being stripped of their ova and smolt, were returned to the pool to recruit, prior to being transferred to Lake Logan.
As many were of great size, weighing up to about 20lb, Lake Logan should, during the coming season, afford ideal sport to the ardent disciples of Isaak Walton. - ODT, 12.7.1909.
