The loud echo of drums could be heard throughout Wanaka’s business district on Saturday, as more than a dozen children and adults from Wanaka were taken out of their comfort zone to learn something a little different - West African drumming and dancing.
Teacher Robert Fugah, originally of Ghana, has been travelling around the South Island for the past month teaching people of all ages the traditions of his homeland.
Mr Fugah said the popularity of West African drumming had grown since he arrived in New Zealand five years ago.
He stressed having fun was the most important thing, and the right sound would be made from the drums by those who were not scared of trying something new.
