The construction of roundabouts at two busy intersections in Wānaka is set to begin this Summer.

In June this year Wānaka-Upper Clutha Community Board members were briefed on an update on Property and Infrastructure activities of interest.

As part of the Minor Works Programme QLDC has been considering improvements to key intersections within Wanaka.

One such intersection is the Golf Course Road – Ballantyne Road intersection.

The Golf Course Rd is the main project identified within the tender, however, the intersection of McDougall Street and Brownstown Street has also been proposed for improvements.

Queenstown lakes District Council has now put the two projects out to tender.

The proposed roundabout at Golf Course Rd and Ballantyne Rd intersection will also serve the future connection to the Three Parks development via a currently unnamed road.

The roundabout is proposed in an elongated (peanut) form due to land restrictions, and will accommodate pedestrians on all arms and cyclists both on- and off- carriageway.

A Queenstown Lakes District council spokeswoman confirmed that McDougall St/Brownston St is getting a roundabout and associated zebra crossings.

The two works are set to be delivered as part of the same works package

“Given the potential interaction between the two projects, it is important that a single contractor manages traffic movements and coordinates construction staging across both sites to minimise disruption. “This approach reflects lessons learnt from the separate but concurrent construction of the Riverbank Road/Ballantyne Road and Riverbank Road/SH6/SH84 roundabouts.

“Final details on the project timeframes and traffic management staging and methods, will be confirmed once a contractor has been appointed,” she said.

Works will be completed over the 2026-2027 summer period.
