A major sporting event is setting up in Alexandra - and ''spirited women'' are being wooed to take part in the South Island first.

The Spirited Women All Women's Adventure Race will be held in Central Otago from February 14-16 next year, Dare2Sweat Events Ltd director Neil Gellatly has announced.

It is the first to be held in the South Island, following four years of events in the North Island.

About 1600 competitors and 500 supporters have been attracted to each event - which has pumped more than an estimated $900,000 into the host district for each of the last two.

Mr Gellatly, who moved with his family to Alexandra earlier this year and moved the base for his Dare2Sweat event management company to Alexandra at the same time, said events would continue to be held every year in the South Island.

But, as with the North Island, the location for the South Island would change each year, he said.

He and event manager Kezia Trask said the event was about inspiring and empowering women, and was expected to appeal to the ''adventurous, outdoors-type people'', typical of Otago.

The course would be made available to participants at the briefing the night before. There are three categories and competitors take part in four-member teams.

It was thought some ''high-profile'' athletes would feature in the event and a high-profile female guest speaker would also be secured, although identities were still to be confirmed, Mr Gellatly said.

Entries for the event will open online at 7am on Tuesday.
