The Manuherekia Valley’s Charitable Trust has received a substantial boost to its fundraising efforts to build the Omakau hub with a $800,000 grant from the Central Lakes Trust and a further $10,000 from the Otago Masonic Charitable Trust.

The grants have pushed up the red "barometer", the tally board that has been keeping track of the fundraising on the road side of the Omakau Recreation Reserve where the hub will be built, to $3.310million.

In April Breen Construction was awarded the contract to build the 948sq m building, which will replace the existing club rooms and hall. It will have a commercial kitchen, a function room with bar facilities, dedicated meeting spaces with video conferencing, changing rooms, a gym and a whānau quiet space as well as a hall capable of holding up to 200 people.

It will also house the Omakau Toy Library.

In the Central Otago District Council’s long term plan, the trust was granted up to $1.6m if needed to cover any shortfall in funding to allow the building to be completed.
