A luncheon marking the 25th anniversary of the Alexandra and districts branch of the Red Cross was a momentous occasion of another sort for 14 of its members.

During the lunch at Centennial Court in Alexandra on Monday, service awards were presented to members who had spent between five and 30 years working for the organisation.

Area manager Richard Garden said the recipients of the 2008 service awards had 188 years of volunteer service between them.

While the Alexandra branch celebrated its 25th year of service it was also the 75th anniversary of the New Zealand Red Cross.

Those to receive service awards included Mary Jones and Russell Poole, who were honoured for 20 years of service; 30-year-service recipients were Shirley Morait, Audrey Tombs and Norma Warwick, the final two receiving life membership along with Les Tombs.

Foundation members Jennifer Bowie and June Medlin were also recognised as having served the branch since it began 25 years ago.
