Donald Carey was the lucky winner from more than 2500 entries in an Otago Daily Times competition at the Wanaka A&P Show - however, his friends were even luckier.

After winning the competition to guess the weight of a merino ram, Mr Carey, a farmer from Kokonga (near Ranfurly), chose to share his prize with his delighted friends, Ian, Judy, Freddie (11) and Phoebe (8) Hore.

The prize was a flight with Alpine Helicopters immediately after the show on Saturday.

The show, in brilliant weather, attracted 38,000 people across Friday and Saturday, organisers said.

There were more than 450 stalls and numerous events.

During their hour-long trip to the head of Lake Wanaka and around Minaret Station, to the foot of Mt Aspiring - including two stops on mountain peaks - the group soaked up spectacular vistas of the Southern Alps.

The ram, provided by Robbie Gibson, from the Malvern Downs merino stud at Tarras, proved a real drawcard at the ODT tent.

The answers ranged from 22kg to 880kg, but it was Mr Carey who came closest with his guess of 93.2kg. The ram's actual weight was 93.18kg.

He described his estimate as a ''lucky guess''.
