Crash a close call for dad, boys

Three boys and their father had a close call today when the vehicle they were in slammed into the back of a bus on the Lindis Pass near Ardgour Rd.

Sergeant Bruce Terry, of Cromwell, said the bus driver slammed on the brakes when a car two in front of it suddenly slowed to turn into the Old Faithfull rest stop on State Highway 8 about 1.15pm.

The drivers behind all had to brake, and the fourth car in the line, the family's vehicle, which was towing a trailer with motorbikes on it, slammed into the back of the bus.

One of the boys was treated for minor injuries by ambulance officers at the scene. The others were shaken, but unhurt. Their vehicle was badly damaged, as was the back of the bus.

Sgt Terry said the family was "local", but declined to say where they came from.

He issued a plea to drivers to take care  with a high volume of holiday traffic on the roads at present.

"Everyone needs to take care and be patient."
